WELCOME TO THE COPTIC MONASTERY OF ST. SHENOUDA

Updates | Newsletters

The order of St. Shenouda Monastery is a revival of the order of St. Shenouda the Archimandrite from the 4th-5th centuries.  It combines the life of seclusion for prayer and meditation, together with the service for the community in a coenobitic life. Therefore, whenever the monk in the order of Abba Shenouda goes out to serve the community in the neighborhood, he will not be in breach of his monastic rule. Just as St. Shenouda built his monastery in Suhaj near the villages which he serves and was accustomed to open the gates of his monastery for the people on Saturdays and Sundays, so that they may hear his sermons and participate in the Eucharistic prayers, so also his monastery here in Rochester is not in a desert, but in the countryside in the suburbs of the cities and towns which will be served by the monks of the monastery.

Therefore, after the model of St. Shenouda the Archimandrite, this monastery in Rochester, NY, is intended to provide:

1) the life of seclusion for prayer and meditation

2) community services

3) educational programs for strengthening and spreading the faith

11/26/2006 -- We thank God that while the construction of the new monastery building is underway, we now have space to house those who would like to come and have a spiritual retreat here. Through the personal loan of someone interested in the monastery, the monastery has purchased a house with its 5 acres of land to the east of St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church (which is at a corner across the street from the new monastery building under construction).

This house can accommodate up to 20 people, however, they must be either all male or all female at the same time, unless they are all of the same family coming for a retreat.

As a further update, the purchase of Sts. Peter and Paul Church has been delayed for a few more weeks until the old boiler in the church is replaced. By the grace of God, the closing should be around the time of the beginning of the New Year.

This building project is occuring in parallel with the purchase of the Coptic Mission Center.  God willing, the Coptic Mission Center purchase should occur within the next few weeks.

Given this significant financial burden, the monastery is in need of your donations.  If you, or anyone you know, would like to participate in taking the blessing of donating to these projects, please make checks payable to: St. Shenouda Monastery:
